Pipelines on Display: NPMS

Posted by Jennifer on Aug 22, 2018 9:30:00 AM

Whether you’re a pipeline operator, government official, or part of the general  public, it’s important to know where oil and gas pipelines reside, both for the safety of the community at large, and for the safety of your family and loved ones. How are you supposed to find this information? Easy! It’s called the National Pipeline Mapping System (NPMS).

The NPMS is a “dataset containing locations of and information about gas transmission and hazardous liquid pipelines and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) plants which are under the jurisdiction of the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA)”. The information gathered and made available can be helpful in different ways to pipeline operators, government agencies, and the public.

Let’s take a look at what’s required and how it’s used by these groups.

Pipeline Cyber Security

Posted by Shelly on Jul 16, 2018 11:09:35 AM

This post is not meant to endorse specific agencies or companies, nor is it meant to support any specific piece of legislation. Rather, we just wanted to begin a much-needed conversation about cyber security and our nation’s pipelines.

It’s 2018.

We are all aware of the acute threats from hackers and of their ability to wreak havoc, disrupt infrastructure, and compromise data integrity. And the threat to the oil and gas industry is no less.

The US has the largest network of energy pipelines in the world, with more than 2.7 million miles of pipe. A cybersecurity breach within the pipeline environment could have a tremendous impact, from compromised data creating competitive disadvantages to automated pressure changes causing catastrophic physical disruptions.

Planning, Preparation and Prevention: Pipeline Safety Before, During and After a Hurricane

Posted by Sarah on Sep 15, 2017 9:30:00 AM

June through November are known as the Atlantic Hurricane Season; and according to PHMSA, the Gulf Coast supplies 18% of the oil and 6% of the natural gas produced in the US. Production interruptions caused by hurricanes are capable of triggering supply shortages to Gulf Coast refiners, and a subsequent rise in gasoline prices.

The Houston-area is recovering from the devastation Hurricane Harvey inflicted just a few weeks ago, while Florida attempts to re-build after Irma roared through, with Jose right on her heels. Although Jose is projected to remain out at sea, hurricanes can be very unpredictable, leaving an uncertain future for the East Coast.

Detecting Leaks and Preventing Misfortunes

Posted by Shelly on Aug 9, 2017 10:00:00 AM

To say that a leaking pipeline is no good may be the understatement of all time. We hear about the major pipeline leaks and spills, but what about leaks that happen closer to home? Like inside your house or business. Would you know what to look for and what to do when a pipe leak is suspected?

It’s simple, really, and starts with your senses. Use your nose, eyes, and ears to stop a potentially unstable situation before it becomes worse.
